Blaze

I often think of life in seasons - sometimes summer: bright and shining; joyful and straightforward; a celebration. Other times winter: bleak and difficult; dark and uncertain.

At the minute, I feel I'm in Autumn: changing and transitioning once again. It's a great season to be in because there's much potential and plenty to look forward to. But it's also a little of letting go of the past season; just like when leaves fall off trees. It's not always easy.

This song has been my favourite recently for a number of reasons - its melody, slow pace and beautiful, interesting lyrics.

The Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego that are sung about are found in one of my favourite bits of the Old Testament. They deserve special mention because they turned their back on what was socially acceptable, didn't bow down to the gods of the day, and risked death for their beliefs:

"...If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

But they didn't just survive the blazing furnace, God was in the fire with them:

Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty." He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

I reference this song and story for many reasons, but mostly because it's been a reminder to keep going. That it's worth standing up for what you believe in and because I think God is present even in the fire - during the testing times. Maybe not always as physically as with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego but during the difficulties, the troublesome bits and the things that feel a little bit sore.

And if nothing else, this song does repetitive well, and it brings a bit of calm to my everyday.

"Blaze: burn fiercely or brightly; shine brightly or powerfully."
