Radical

I work in a building where everyone seems to have a different expression of their faith and it's so exciting to learn from others and join them on their journey. For me, Christianity is being part of my local Church and getting involved. But I've loved watching and learning about what beliefs really mean for others.

I'm talking about the broader sense , not just Christianity, but what it is we value and strive towards. And what inspires me most about the people around me is that everyone's trying to create change. That's a good thing in an NGO; we're trying to inspire and encourage and impact. But I think something special happens when we're passionate and it seeps into our whole lives too. So that we're not just working nine to five passionate people some of the time. We're wholly passionate people all of the time. You don't even need to work nine to five. You don't even need to work.

A good word for me this week is Radical:

"...elating to or affecting the fundamental nature of something; far-reaching or thorough."

Because as I watch and learn from others around me, I'm also listening to people too. This radical word is something that's not always encouraged. It's sometimes a bit crazy to be radical. A bit too unusual or abstract.

But imagine what we could do if we were radical. If we could affect the fundamental nature of something.

See, it's about a whole life devotion to being passionate about what you believe in and it doesn't matter what life stage you're at. It's not even just about working somewhere that's amazing. I think it's being determined to create change.I've spoken to friends recently who are stressed about work. I've spoken to others who are stressed about not having work. This stage of our lives is fluid and flexible. We don't know what could happen next. It's a changing and uncertain time.

I'm there too. And it stifles our radicalness. It stops us from believing that we can create change because we put boundaries on our lives:

If I had more money, then I could...

If I could speak this language, then I could...

If I had specialised in this field, then I could...

Three things I've been thinking about my life this week. And I imagine many others are the same. But like I said earlier, something special happens when we're passionate and it seeps into our whole lives.

Not just being excited about Jesus at Church on Sunday.
Not just being enthusiastic about ending poverty in office hours.

This week I've been challenged to be radical. Not just when it suits me, or when I've got a bit of spare time. But to strip back to basics and remember what I'm striving towards.

Let's stop setting boundaries and ifs.

Be radical.

Because this is what it means:

"forming an inherent or fundamental part of the nature of someone or something."
